Description

me on my knees, begging: please crewniverse, stop brightening the blue gems and start sticking to one design
crewniverse: fuck you *spits on me and makes lapis' nose smaller*

---
for those saying that the colors/designs for blue diamond were stylized in ‘the answer’:

- the one-color scheme does altar some palettes (like crystal gem pearl looked drastically different, mainly because she wears like 3 different colors), but blue diamond is all blue. though she’s darker in the shadows, yes, the regular palette (the hands in the drawing) is still dramatically different.

- blue pearl’s appearance and colors are almost identical (68.media.tumblr.com/6d59c89af6…) so you can’t use the excuse that steven was imagining everything and didn’t see bd the right way. what i drew above is pretty much what they showed us in 'the answer’, so there’s no reason to change the nose or the darker colors

---
for those saying that lapis looked darker because that’s her night palette:

- logically, it makes sense that lapis is lighter in the day and darker in the night. but the first time we see lapis w/o the dark palette? is when she and steven are on a luminescent pillar in 'ocean gem’. (s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/o…) her and steven’s palette are waay brighter, understandably since they’re standing a intense, almost white light, yet this palette is the same as when she’s standing around during the day. yes, she should be lighter, but not that light. (and even on the pillar lapis is not as saturated as she is on earth)

- night/day aside, her lighter palette should look more azure/french blue rather than cyan (s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/7…) her hair and skin were around the same color just different shades, so how did her skin become cyan and her hair stayed the darker blue?

- this is purely personal preference, but the colors are so strong that they’re hard on the eyes. lapis’ day palette looks like she’d glow in the dark.

---
for those saying there’s a lot of animators so there’s bound to be inconsistencies:

- this is about the hair comment, right? okay, admittedly this was a minor detail in the whole argument. i overall don’t have too big of a problem with the crewniverse’s styles (by this point i’m used to visible style changes)

- if you’re talking about the big picture, i’ll say that makes them even more responsible for huge design changes like these

---
for those saying that they’re darkened because they’re evil and antagonistic (+ lightened when they’re good):

- …maybe? for subtle lighting cues that would work, but in these two cases the differences are pretty dramatic.

- if this is the case, it’s a pretty trite way to dichotomize good and evil. a character shouldn’t be lighter and more conventionally-attractive when they’re shown as sympathetic

---
in conclusion:

the problem w/ lapis: the color scheme is way too bright compared to her past palettes and the saturation is hard on the eyes.
my solution: just turn the saturation down and lessen the cyan. it’s really that simple

the problem w/ blue diamond: her colors are a lot lighter than before and her nose is prominently more sloped and less stevonnie-like.
my solution: just… stick to the original design? like you can make her as pretty and emotional as you want but she can still do that while dark

---
keep in mind that i don’t watch steven universe to specifically point out issues like this. if you like lapis’ current design, that’s fine! i’m just analyzing from a design/continuity perspective while still enjoying the show. (lapis’ issues is 50% personal preference, but blue diamond’s is a more prominently a continuity problem.)

i know this is old, but!! at the time when they did the answer, blue diamond's design wasn't finalized yet for some reason, which is why she looks different from then on!
